How the final exam calculation works

Your course grade is a weighted average. If the final is worth 25%, everything else is worth the remaining 75%. So your end-of-term grade equals 0.75 × your current grade plus 0.25 × your final exam score. Solving that for the exam gives the formula FinalGradeCalc uses: needed score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With a current grade of 84% and a target of 85%, that is (85 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 88%. If the answer is above 100%, the target cannot be reached on the exam alone. If it is zero or less, the grade is already secured.

Getting your current grade right

Your current grade should be your grade on everything except the final, using the class weights. Many learning platforms show a running total, but some count missing work as zero or leave out categories that have not been graded yet. The weighted grade panel lets you enter each category, such as homework, quizzes, labs and midterm, with its score and weight. It averages them using only the weight entered so far, and the Use as current grade button copies the result into the final calculator and sets the final to the remaining weight.

Test scores and letter grades

A test score is the share of questions answered correctly. Forty questions with six wrong is 34 ÷ 40 = 85%. The letter grade uses the common US plus and minus scale: 93 and above is an A, 90 is an A-, 87 a B+, 83 a B, 80 a B-, and so on down to 60 for a D-. Schools vary, so check your syllabus if you are close to a cut-off.

Curving grades

Teachers sometimes curve a hard test. A flat curve adds the same number of points to everyone so the top score becomes 100. The square root curve takes 10 × √score, which lifts a 49 to 70 but an 81 only to 90. Shifting to a target average adds the difference between the class mean and the target.
